Jefferson City Schools bus riders will see some changes next year. The JCS transportation department has been working this past year to improve the efficiency of their routes.
Highlights of the route include a 15-minute cushion time period for breakfast. Concerns were previously raised about younger students that didn’t have time to eat breakfast upon arrival at school.
Routes will be reversed so students that are picked up first in the mornings will be dropped off first in the afternoon. The new routes are also believed to be a solution for the overcrowding bus problems.
"We don't believe that once this is implemented and in place that we'll ever have an overloaded bus again," said superintendent Dr. John Jackson.
Previously, some students had been picked up as early as 6 a.m. The new routes will eliminate this situation, with the earliest pick-up being at 6:30 a.m. with Jefferson Academy students to school by 7:10 a.m. and JES students to school by 7:20 a.m.
Pick-up times for Jefferson Middle School and Jefferson High School are approximated at 7:25 a.m. with drop-off time at 8:05 a.m.
The change in routes has also led to a change in school times including:
•JA – 7:25 a.m. start, 2:40 p.m. end
•JES – 7:35 a.m. start, 2:25 p.m. end
•JMS – 8:20 a.m. start, 3:35 p.m. end
•JHS – 8:20 a.m. start, 3:25 p.m. end
Some concerns have been raised from parents with children at two different schools, with a large variance in start times. Earl Griffin, transportation director, agreed that the disparity was something to look into.
The routes will be the same in the afternoons with the first students being picked up from JES at 2:25 p.m. then to JA at 2:40 p.m. Buses will return for their second trip to JHS at 3:25 p.m. and JMS at 3:25 p.m.
The 12 routes will be re-evaluated following registration.
