The Apalachee High School softball team has been working throughout the summer in preparation for its new season under the direction of a new coach.
The Lady Wildcats, who finished 18-14 last season, will host Union Grove at 7 p.m. Friday in a preseason scrimmage.
“We will be the only game in town,” new coach Matt Allen said. “It’s great that it’s a game that won’t count in the standings because we get to go out and see who can play when the lights are on. We’ve seen what they can do in practice, but this will be more of a game atmosphere.”
Young is probably the best word to describe the AHS program this fall.
Allen said he will dress as many players as he has uniforms available for during the scrimmage.
“We are very excited about this,” the new coach said. “It gives our players a chance to show what they can do. We have several right on the edge of being very good varsity players.”
The coach said some players who are more established on the varsity level may actually play less Friday in the scrimmage to allow younger, less experienced players a chance to make the final roster.
Following Friday’s scrimmage, AHS will compete in the Hawk-Bulldogg Invitational beginning Wednesday, Aug. 13, against Archer at 8 p.m. and against Dacula on Friday, Aug. 15, at 6 p.m.
Games will continue Saturday, Aug. 16, against Jefferson (3 p.m.) and Mill Creek (5 p.m.)
Allen said he is also looking forward to a Tuesday, Aug. 19, non-region contest against Winder-Barrow High School in a home 6:30 p.m. start time.
“(Coach) Monty (McClure) has a good thing going at Winder-Barrow so we want to see where we stand against them,” Allen said. “We are all eager to get the new season going. The girls have been working hard to be prepared.
