A Jackson County woman is in critical condition in an Athens hospital following an apparent murder-suicide Friday evening off of Hwy. 124.
Mary Kemp was shot in the back of the head. Her son, Brandon, who is in late 30s, was found at the scene deceased.
“The investigation suggests right now that he died of an apparent self-inflicted gun shot,” Mike Ayers, with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said.
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call from Mrs. Kemp.
“She was conscious and able to talk,” Ayers said.
Mrs. Ayers was taken to an Athens hospital and underwent surgery. She remains in critical condition.
Mr. Ayers’ body was taken to the crime lab for an autopsy.
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is the lead agency in the investigation, with the GBI providing assistance.
