An effort to rescue a pig from being slaughtered for an East Jackson Comprehensive High School fundraiser is going strong.
The Athens woman who started a gofundme website called “Winning Wilbur by Katie Corbett” (http://www.gofundme.com/cspsxk) to save a pig met with the school’s principal last Friday. The annual raffle benefits the school’s cheerleading team and the winner receives 100 pounds of pork distributed through a butcher. There is no particular pig awaiting slaughter for the fundraiser.
Although no solution has been reached yet, Katie Corbett and a supporter met with EJCHS principal Jamie Dixon last Friday.
“We had a great conversation,” said Dixon, who relayed that the two offered him an alternative.
“The problem is that they want a pig in return, and I don’t have a pig,” said Dixon, who added that the two women were “very nice.”
Corbett last week posted an update on the fundraising website stating that the current plan is to purchase an iPad (or other incentive prize) to sway the raffle winner away from the pork. The post also states that they plan to make a donation to the school should the incentive prize be chosen. Dixon said he’d like to be able to work with them, but isn’t sure he can.
“I think that is awfully kind and I really like it, but they want a pig in return and we don’t have a pig,” said Dixon. “The processor just donates the meat and I don’t have a pig to associate that with. Obviously that meat is associated with a pig, but at that point, it’s just meat.”
As of Monday, Corbett’s fundraiser had raised $3,676 toward its $5,000 goal.
