Is anyone else ready for a complete, meaningful game of football? It can’t just be me. All of these NFL Preseason games have been nothing more than a tease as we await real football.
Sure, some high school teams have already begun their seasons but everyone is eagerly waiting for the beginning of both college and professional football. And this is a big season for college football, let’s not forget about the brand new college football playoff that debuts this year.
ESPN has already begun a great marketing campaign to remind everyone that we will (finally) have a playoff to determine the national champion.
Four teams will make up the first ever college football playoff, right now it seems pretty obvious who the favorites to make it are but as we all know everything can (and probably will) change once the season starts.
One of the favorites to make the playoff was Ohio State, they are returning plenty of top caliber starters to a team that was already very talented from last season — but they took a blow when their All-American quarterback Braxton Miller got hurt and is now out for the entire season.
Other favorites like Oregon and Alabama should have great shots to make the playoff. Oregon always has one of the most talented teams in the country but seems to always lose one or two games against other top caliber Pac-12 teams. But still, it shouldn’t come as a shocker if they were to make it.
Alabama has some questions about filling holes in their lineup, but at the end of the day a program like Alabama doesn’t rebuild they simply reload.
They unfortunately play in the SEC West which is one of the hardest conferences to compete in, Auburn and LSU will also be looking to take the Tide’s place in the SEC Championship game.
Oklahoma has been getting plenty of buzz and seem to be getting picked to win the Big 12 and go to the playoff, it’s hard to argue seeing as they have one of the most talented returning squads in the country —and the fact that they handled Alabama at the end of last year, makes sense.
Nobody is really questioning Florida State’s chances of making the playoff, the defending Champions have a ton of returning talent, most notably, their Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Jameis Winston. There aren’t too many teams in the ACC that can challenge the Seminoles for that top spot, they are as close to a guarantee as any other team in the country.
Everyone has their favorites but here are a few teams that not many people are giving a chance to be in the playoff that could sneak their way in. UCLA and Michigan State are two programs that definitely have what it takes to make a run at the playoff, both teams should have great seasons and will be competing for their conference titles respectively.
Stanford is another PAC-12 team that might be able to find their way to this new playoff, they always seem to climb the standings and find themselves in the awkward position of being close to the Championship Game but never quite there.
The Georgia Bulldogs have a question at the quarterback spot but aside from that are returning a ton of talented players that could see them making the SEC Championship game and competing against the SEC West Champion for a possible spot in the playoff.
The season will be long, chances are there will be a team that wasn’t even mentioned here in the playoff — that should be fun, let’s just wait and see.
