The Winder-Barrow High School wrestling team is set will host the George Thompson Memorial tournament Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.
Nine area schools will compete in the event, named for Thompson, a former standout wrestler for the Matt Bulldoggs.
“It should be a competitive tournament,” said WBHS coach Chad Horne.
In addition to the Mat Bulldoggs and Apalachee High School, Chestatee, Crawford County, Buford, Eastside, Oconee County, Clarke Central and Heritage are scheduled to compete.
Horne said Oconee County has a strong team and Apalachee has come on lately.
“Clarke Central has some good wrestlers and Buford and Heritage should also be strong,” the WBHS coach said. “Eastside is the defending state champion.”
Admission to Saturday’s event is $7 per session or $10 for an all-day pass.
The tournament is named in honor of George Thompson, who died in a car accident during his senior year at WBHS.
The Matt Bulldoggs practiced this week in preparation for the event and coaches held a seeding meeting Monday.
