Wreck kills EJCHS student on Hwy. 129 in Redstone

A student from East Jackson Comprehensive High School was killed and two other people, including another teen, were injured Tuesday afternoon when a truck hit a car broadside on Hwy. 129 in the South Jackson community of Redstone.

The wreck happened at the intersection of Hwy. 129 and New Kings Bridge Road around 4:20 p.m. The driver of the car — Kason Dubose, 17, Commerce — was pronounced dead at the scene.

The second teen — Brandon Garrett, 17 — and the driver of the truck — Kenneth Owens, 45, Comer — were transported to Athens Regional Medical Center. Garrett was said to be in "critical" condition while the truck driver had non-life threatening injuries.

Units from South Jackson Fire and Rescue, Jackson County EMS and the Jackson County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene. Hwy. 129 was closed on the southbound side for around 30 minutes.

BRASELTON WRECK
Also Tuesday afternoon, a Winder woman who taught school in Hall County was killed in a wreck on New Cut Road in Braselton.

The Georgia State Patrol said Maria Cabel, 54, was driving along New Cut Road when she crossed the centerline and tried over-correcting her Toyota Corolla.

Cabel later crossed over Hwy. 53 and drove into a ditch, where her vehicle was overturned, according to the state patrol.

Cabel was ejected from the passenger side window, troopers said. Reports from the scene said the vehicle landed on the driver and she was pulled from underneath by bystanders.

Cabel was taken by helicopter to Grady Memorial Hospital.

Hwy. 53 was closed temporarily during the accident.

Kason was a beautiful person, and he always helped others in time of need, and even though he is gone he very well missed and we will never forget him, he was always there for anybody that just needed a freind to talk to and he would always put a smile on your face, he was a dear friend, and i loved him very much and he was like a brother to me and though I sit here with out him with me, i thank god that he brought some one so sweet and caring into my life, Kason brighend up my day when i was down like a knight in shining armor, i miss him so much god has given him his wings and now he is in a better place we love you and we miss you kason!!!!

Though i didnt know Kason all that well i do know him enough to be very upset about what has happened he was always happy and always had a smile on his face. He was one of the sweetest guys i know. i didn't no Kason that well. But i saw him walking around in the halls and he was always smiling about something. ...i new BG and he was so cool he went with my best friend...but just being at school is hard...its so hard to be at school and not cry...this is one of the hardest things i've been through and i don't even no them really.
i will keep the dubose family and garrett family in my prayers....i no he will truly be missed.

Wow it just seems so un real to me like i just was playing basketball with Kason in P.E. yesterday and now today he is gone. I love him he ment the world to me. His sister and I are real close friends and I know how she feels. I can picture all the good times we had together like it was just yesterday. He will be very much missed. I dont think I will every forget him. I know he is in a better place now but, I know I will see him when I get up there. I am going to miss him so much. I love you Kason.

As a parent of 7 children.The youngest being a senior at JHS my heart goes out to the family. This in an unimaginable loss..
Each of these kids teach us so much and have so much to add to our lives. To the families God be with you. To the friends..remember them well..Be greatful for the time you had with them..learn something from the friendship you had..Cherish your time together...And to all of us..Be thankful for your children today.Because they are the greatest gift in life.

My dear friend is a teacher at EJCHS. She has e-mailed and requested prayers for families/students/faculty/staff at EJCHS. I work in a school in Florida. Over the years, we have unfortunately had, too many times, the same tragedy in our school. These circumstances are NEVER easy and the pain is NEVER any less. Find comfort in talking with others. There, you will share memories of your friend that is gone. Be sure to laugh at the good memories. Your friend would want that. There are tears of sorrow and tears of joy. It's OK to have both kinds of tears at the same time. Go often to see your friend that is injured. He will need a lot of friends now, to help him deal with his physical injuries as well as being right there with his friend in the accident.

Just know that you have friends in Florida, over the miles, that are praying for your comfort in the loss of a dear friend and the injuries of another. May God be with each of you at this time, give you comfort, and the strength to support each other.

the student that was killed was one of my friends and he will be missed by all. he always had something to smile about, he was always nice and he wasnt a bad student. he will be missed by all and i hope he is going to be happy with the lord... KD was too young to die but i guess that the lord thought it was his time to go so he called him home to live up there with him. KD you will be missed and i hope that you are going to be happy where you live at now. this came as a shock to many people that didnt think that this would ever happen to a young person like him but it did.

Although i am no longer in school i still remember kason very well. We had several classes together. He was the guy that would make you laugh even when you didn't want to and he was a great person and always had a smile on his face. He will be greatly missed and will be in our hearts always! I Did Not Know Kason, But I know his sister. She loved her brother very much. I know it doesn't make sense as to why he had to die, but I guess God needed another angel in heaven. I send my greatest sympathy to his family and friends.You will always be in my thoughts and prayers.

I did not know Kason all that well but I talked to him a few times. I may have not hung out with him after school or anything like that but i know how great of a person he was. I have known the Dubose family for a long time, I used to take them home in the afternoon on my bus route when he was in elementary school. Years have passed and I had the pleasure of picking him up every morning for the past two years. There was never a morning that I did not get a good morning and as he exited my bus I always got a five. His smile could light up a room and he was always so polite and respectful, (he knew I knew his mom real well, HA! HA!). His time was short here and I know he is in a far better place, but the pain is so real and only time and the good Lord can heal this. To the Dubose family you are in my prayers and thoughts. To the other young man I have not had the pleasure of meeting you, I hope you have a speedy recovery my thoughts and prayers to your family as well.

I haven't known Kason for long however, when i did talk to him he was always smileing about something. He always managed to brighten my day, though we haven't had much time to get to know each other well, he acted like he had known me forever. My thoughts and Prayers go out to all his friends and family. I will miss him dearly as will the rest of EJCHS. I look forward to seeing Kason in our home in the sky one day.

Brandon was my best friend we have been close since the first time i'd met him in middle school. He was always joking around and always had something smart to say. He was and still is an amazing athlete. I know he can pull through this and i'm sure he will be the same funny, Brandon as he was before. Also my thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

I remember when Kason, older brother Kwame, and younger sister Malika first enrolled with the school system. It was a pleasure watching these three grow. I have admired Mr. and Mrs. DuBose for years primarily because the investment they put into their children is time and effort well spent. It takes a lot of love to raise three of your own children and then invite in four more who needed what only a stable loving family can provide. Kason will be sorely missed, but I have to believe these last nine years were the best years of his life.

Kason was the kind of guy that could literally light up everyone's face when he entered a room. We have gone to school together since elementary school. Kason never went anywhere without a huge smile on his face. Although it is extremely difficult right now we have to put our faith in God and know that he is all knowing and that this is part of his plan.

I just got done reading my yearbook from 8th grade and this is a statement that Kason wrote in my yearbook. "Tears don't last forever, memories do." I think we should all think about Kason's words.

Kason will be missed. My fmaily and I are praying for the Dubose family and Brandon.

I remeber one morning not to long ago we got out of weight traing early so I went downstairs and Kason picked me for his team even tho my ankle was broke, he didn't care he was just being a good friend. I didn't get many shots that day but the few I did get to take was because of Kason, he never forgot me...Thats the kind of person he was he just cared, Lil Swurve just swurved through life drama free with the upmost composure. Kason, I didn't really know you that much but when we had a class together you were so friendly. You always had a smile on your face no matter what your mood was. You are a great guy and I will miss seeing you. My prayers go out to the Dubose family.

Brandon, wow! where do I even begin? When I moved to east you were my first friend. I was the shy one the first couple weeks of school but your the one that cracked me out of my shell. You talked to me like you knew me your whole life. You always knew how to cheer me up and I'm never gonna forget when you gave me the nickname cheerleaderbasketballgirl. lol. My heart goes out to Kason's family.I have known Kason Dubose since third grade. We were like brother and sister back then. He was a great person to be around. He was always there for me when I needed help in anything. I remember sitting on the bus with him and him helping me with my homework. He made it so much easier. Wow, Kason i rode the bus with you since the 7th grade. Me and you were always buddies. I use to make you move your stuff in the morning so i could sit with you. And you'd just huff and puff and act like you didn't want me sitting there. I know you did though. In the afternoons I'd always aggravate you asking for your phone so i could steal all your ring tones. It doesn't even seem real that your gone. You have no idea how much I'm going to miss you.

Alright Mr. Garrett. I remember when we had Mrs. Cunninghams class together in the 7th grade. You'd always sit beside me and mumble crap in my ear. I thought you were the craziest person I'd ever met. The one thing i aint never gonna forget is all the times you yanked my sweat pants down in front of everyone. WOW god took my friend,he was great and he had a really good smile. He was always happy and never hurt anyone and he was a really good friend and i cry everyday because i know that i will not see him walking around laughing and smiling like he used to he was loved by everyone and he loved everyone. i wish he was still here and if i could have said one last thing to him i would have told him that he was a good friend and that i love him. its really hard to let go of something like this it hurts. Now your gone and will be missed by so many and you have No idea how much im going to miss you....its hard but kason dubose will always be in my heart forever and i will always love him. Its hard to let go of someone that you love that much. Kason DuBose had the best smile and he was always happy and smiling! There was nobody that he disliked he liked everyone and he was there when you needed him. Im going to miss him soooooooo much and i know that he is in a better place nowm, i also know that he was only 17 years old and he was way to young to die!!!!! he will be missed and loved by everyone and he will always be in everyones heart. Kason was a dear friend of mine. I could go to him for advise when i was down. He always had a smile on his face. The worst things happen to great people. I miss you kason. Your family is in my prayers. I'll never forget you. Its not the same at school anymore.

Kason was a person of good character and you could tell by his smile and attitude that he would be a great friend I haven't known him long but the short time that I knew him I liked him as a great friend. I didn't know Kason, that much, I jsut heard about him and what a cool and nice person he was! I felt horrible for everybody that was really close to him, to hear this! I was crying when I found out, I hope you R.I.P Kason. I'm still worrying about brandon though, I knew him, and I was so sad the day I found out about this. I hope he will make it through.

Man, at school everybody is walking around crying asking why. Dont cry and stop asking why. God has everything in control! Kason was so sweet, god just wanted him as one of his angels! He is in a much better place now. He is soaring higher than any eagle ever could!

Kason, i dont even know where to begin.
you are my best friend,my brother,and my hero.
i can't believe this happened to you.
nothing in the world is seeming to add up to me, to tell me why this had to happen to anyone.
Class of '09 was SO close to not losing anyone for the FIRST time.
I can't explain how im feeling right now.
I can't even think straight during the day anymore.
You were the one who made me smile, and make me laugh so hard til the point that i cried, and even make a solution to ALL my problems that's been thrown at me.
I still remember in American History when I would listen to your MP3 player, and I found 2 of my most favorite songs til this day.
You would always want me to sing for you, and I would always get you to rap for me.
But somehow even when you backed out, you still got me to sing those 2 songs for you.
You were the sunshine to this school, and what kept most of us still smilin each and everyday.

I love you more than anything right now Kason. and just to let you know..I'll be singing for you whenever you need me to.

I remember when i was a new student in 8th grade i had to sit next to Kason and every since then i have been in classes with him and we rode the same bus and we did a free style and he would listen to me sing, and he was really creative and had good taste in clothes (orange was his color) and music. Every day he made me laugh and i just can't believe he's gone. We just got done joking around in AP Psychology:) he had us all laughing everyday, no doubt, and he was really smart. Our class will never be the same. Kason was really caring, he would stay in class after all the seniors would leave for lunch and we didn't know why, he was staying behind so that he could help another kid named Brandon who's in our class with his tray because he was on cruches. The little things mattered and i admired so many of his qualities as a person. His parents should be proud to have had such a wonderful person as a son. I remember him asking me about a note BG gave me because Kason was over there tellin him how to give it to me at lunch and i let him read my response and he was like Awww lol. I will cherish that note forever. Both of them will always have a place in my heart, and it just feels like this can't be happening, but i'm glad i got a chance to get to know Kason and actually be able to call him my friend.
I can't wait to see BG because i know he can make it and i know my God is a healer

Kason, where can I start? You were a great person. If I was walking down the hallway with a frown, you would go out of your way to make me laugh. You were so close to graduating, just three months away. I guess God wanted you to recieve your diploma early. I know that in my heart you are walking on golden streets, hand in hand with Jesus. I know that beats walking to another class for more homework. Kason, I've known you since third grade, I still have the Valentine's gift that you gave me. I look at it everyday, and I just smile because I'm thankful to have had you in my life. Kason I could keep writing and tell you how much that I miss you, but I know that you wouldn't like to see me sad. So I just want to say thank you for being a part of my life, and for opening up my eyes.

wow...Kason DuBose had a wonderful smile and its hard knowing that we want be abel to see his smile but i know that he is up there and in a better place!!!! Kason was one of the best people i ever knew. There was not a day that me and him ever had a problem. He was always scuh a good person to everyone and he loved everyone. To see his life taken is probably the worst thing that has happened in my life. Kason i want you to know that i will never forget you. I plan on finding as many ways as i can to keep your name alive. You had so much potential in life. I wish that you still had a chance to show everyone. Wow,I never even thought something like this would happen. kason is my brother and even though I have not seen him since I was about two years old, he still means the world to me. I talked to him and my sister malika sometimes. He sounded like a really nice person. In everyone of these comments that I read everyone was talking about how he had the power to make people laugh even if you did'nt want to. Now I know who I got that from. I give all my love to the Dubose family(their parents), my sis Malika and my brother Kwame. And to my brother kason all I want to say is I love you and when my time on earth is done, I'll see you in heaven.

I knew Brandon Garrett when i was in middle school at EJMS, and he was a real sweetie. It stinks that he was hurt. I feel soo bad for the parents of both boys. I know alot of my old classmates have written comments on here and i know yall know these boys a whole lot better than i do but, its just really sad.
Im praying for everyone there at EJCHS!!!

I wasn't really close to kason but when i found out that he had passed away it broke my heart because when I went to school with there was not a day that went by that he didn't have a smile on his face. He was such a happy person to be around. I wasn't here when he went home to Jesus but I know one thing. He is a better place and he is not hurting anymore. I wish he was here. He is missed and loved very much. I love you Kason.. RIP>>>
