JEFFERSON – Robert M. Bailey, 86, died Thursday, March 5, 2009.
Born in Jefferson, he was the son of the late George Wyatt and Minnie Caroline White Bailey. He was a graduate of Martin Institute and the University of Georgia. He was a United States Air Force veteran, having served during World War II, flying “The Hump” from Burma to China, and eventually retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. He worked as a Ford dealer at Jefferson Motor Company for 55 years, was past president of the Jefferson Rotary Club, served as Mayor of the City of Jefferson, and was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Jefferson.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth Aderholt Bailey, Jefferson; sons and daughters-in-law, Bob and Sue Bailey, Lawrenceville, Jimmy and Sylvia Bailey, Jefferson, Tom and Leigh Bailey, Buford; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 7, at 11 a.m., at the First Baptist Church of Jefferson with Jon Appleton officiating. Burial will be in the Woodbine Cemetery in Jefferson. Serving as pallbearers will be Tom Taylor, Jim Joiner, Joe Martin, Ray Bauerband, Nick Bledsoe and Jackie Mack.
The family will receive friends Friday, March 6, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Jefferson Building Fund, P.O. Box 395, Jefferson, GA 30549.
