Qualifying for city elections starts Monday

Qualifying for Commerce’s biennial city elections Nov. 3 will be held from 8:30 to 4:30 Monday through Wednesday at City Hall.

Three seats on the city council and two on the board of education are up for grabs.


The election will fill the seat of mayor pro tem, council seats for Ward 1 and Ward 2 and school board seats for District 1 and District 2. The seats up for election are held by Dusty Slater, Archie Chaney, Donald Wilson, Arthur Lee Pattman and Mary Seabolt respectively. Slater has indicated he will not seek re-election as mayor pro tem.

The qualifying fee for mayor pro tem is $90, each council seat is $81 and each school board seat is $72.


A special election to fill the unexpired term of Bob Sosebee in the Ward 4 city council seat was canceled since only one candidate — Dr. Clark Hill — qualified for the position. That term expires Dec. 31, 2012.

Nicholson, Talmo, Jefferson, Braselton, Hoschton and Arcade will also hold qualifying next Monday through Wednesday for Nov. 3 elections.
