Schools closed Monday

All schools in Jackson, Barrow, Banks and Madison counties are closed Monday due to a heavier than expected snow storm that swept across Northeast Georgia Sunday. In addition, some other government offices and businesses will be closed Monday.

Numerous wrecks and power outages were reported in the four county area. Under the weight of the heavy snow, trees were falling across roads and power lines Sunday afternoon and evening.

The forecast calls for colder weather Sunday night, possibly freezing the snow and slush along roads and bridges.

BOC approves budget, tax rates

Madison County commissioners officially adopted the $14.2 million county budget for 2009, down $850,000, or 5.6 percent, from the 2008 budget of $15 million. Local and state authorities are probing the circumstances that led to the death of a 14-year-old teenager in Hoschton Saturday afternoon. Rescue, EMS and several local police agencies were called to an address on White Street in Hoschton around 2 p.m. Saturday after a 14-year-old girl was found unresponsive.
