Jackson BOC member files complaint against candidate; early voting begins Mon. for runoff races

A member of the Jackson County Board of Commissioners filed a complaint Monday of “harassment by phone” against one of the candidates vying for the BOC chairmanship. District commissioner Dwain Smith filed a complaint with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department against BOC chairman candidate Ron Johnson about a Sunday phone call Johnson allegedly made to Smith.

Meanwhile, early voting for the Aug. 5 runoff will begin Monday in Jackson, Banks and Barrow counties. Highlighting area races are runoffs in Barrow and Jackson counties for Chairman of the BOC and in all three counties a runoff for District Attorney.

Brad Smith will be the new District Attorney for the Piedmont Judicial Circuit. Smith won the runoff election against Donna Sikes 5,502 to 4,218. The balloting for the seat was in Jackson, Barrow and Banks counties.

In Jackson County, Hunter Bicknell won the board of commissioners chairman's seat against Ron Johnson 2,648 to 1,788.

In Barrow County, challenger Danny Yearwood defeated incumbent Doug Garrison 2,542 to 1,600.

Appeal denied: Agri-Cycle to remain closed
