Two adults and three students in Jackson County were transported to area hospitals following a rollover bus wreck Tuesday afternoon. The injuries were not life threatening and all but one of the adults had been released by Wednesday.

Freedom Bank enters cease and desist order

Freedom Bank of Georgia based in Commerce has entered into a “cease and desist order” with state and federal regulators to overhaul the bank’s operations. The bank agreed Dec. 17 to the order and it becomes effective Dec. 27. The bank will maintain its current services and hours and all deposits are covered by the FDIC to the limits allowed by law. Two of the three Piedmont Judicial Circuit Superior Court judges who serve Jackson, Barrow and Banks counties are facing serious medical issues.

Judge Joe Booth, Commerce, was put in intensive care unit at Athens Regional Medical Center over the weekend while Judge David Motes, Jefferson, is facing surgery this coming Thursday.

Booth went to the hospital late last week with flu-like symptoms. The problem was later found to be related to his colon. He had emergency colon removal surgery and has also developed a blood infection.

Motes will undergo surgery Thursday at Athens Regional Medical Center related to a bone infection.

Banks deputy injured in Fri. night wreck

A Banks County Sheriff's Deputy was injured in a two-vehicle wreck around 8:45 p.m. Friday at the intersection of Hwy. 441 and Interstate 85, Banks Crossing.

Sheriff Charles Chapman said Deputy Hunter Whitlock was suffering some neck and knee pain when he was transported from the scene by ambulance.

Chapman said the driver of the Cadillac that struck Whitlock was a female from Jackson County.

Two White County residents have been charged with Sunday’s murder of the youth minister of Pendergrass Baptist Church.

The body of Edward Frank Harris, Jr., 44, Clermont, was found off the roadway near a vacant house in Cleveland around 4 a.m. Monday morning.

William Joseph Dyer, 21, and Jennifer Dawn Lineberger, 29, both of Cleveland have been arrested in the killing. Both suspects have been charged with one count of felony murder. Dyer has also been charged with armed robbery.

According to published reports, Harris called his family Sunday night around 7 p.m. from the church to say he was giving “some stranded people” a ride to Cleveland.

Officers of the Cleveland Police Department are being assisted by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Cleveland Office, the Office of the District Attorney for the Enotah Judicial Circuit, the White County Sheriff’s Office and the White County Coroner’s Office.
