The use of taser guns in Maysville may be allowed if a request from the police chief is approved by the city council.
Police Chief Clarence Sullens spoke at the Maysville City Council work session Thursday on the use of taser guns for the police department.
Currently, the Maysville Police Department does not own any taser guns, but hopes to purchase two, each costing about $1,000.
Sullens, also a taser instructor, explained that having taser guns would be good for the liability of the police department. Bringing along a thick packet of research, Sullens explained that when tasers are implemented, injuries for both officers and offenders are lowered. In 2007, 12,649 incidents of tasing were reported and only four (0.031 percent) resulted in death.
