Man arrested after allegedly shooting at person

Joseph R. Tankersley, 58, 196 Christmas Circle, Colbert, was charged with possession of a firearm or knife during the commission of or attempt to commit certain felonies and obstruction after an incident near his residence recently.

According to the incident report, officer Alan Stratton was sent to Christmas Circle after a man reported that Tankersley had shot at him. The man said his mother had called him to come to her residence on Christmas Circle because a man was standing in the road in front of her house “yelling, howling and cursing” at her. He said he went to the house and found the man (Tankersley) still standing in the road and asked him to leave because he was scaring his mother. Tankersley allegedly told him to come on his side of the road and he would kill him. He said he finally told Tankersely “well just shoot me then” and at that point Tankersley pulled a pistol from his pocket and fired at him. The male then ran down the driveway to his own house.

Stratton went to the house and found Tankersley’s residence door open and several spent shell casings, a fire burning and a cold beer sitting on the porch rail. He eventually found Tankersley hiding behind a pine tree in the woods with the pistol in his hand. He dropped the pistol and came out from behind the tree and began cursing at Stratton and said it would take more deputies than him to arrest him. Another officer arrived and Stratton diverted his attention to this officer and tackled him, forcing him to the ground where he was handcuffed. The fully-loaded gun was then found at the base of the tree. Tankersley said he was not hiding, that he just liked to stand in the dark woods at dark and that Stratton could not take his gun off his property. He also said he did not shoot at anybody, though he had not been asked any questions.

He appeared to be intoxicated and told the officers he was drunk.
