Plans to locate an animal shelter in Jackson County took a huge step forward Monday night when the board of commissioners approved a lease agreement with the Humane Society that will allow the group to construct a facility on county property. The site for the animal shelter is off of General Jackson Drive in the vacant field behind the health department and mental health center. The lease will cover 11 acres and the amount to be paid is $100 per year. The animal shelter will be operated by the Humane Society of Jackson County. The organization will board animals that are impounded by the county animal control department.
