Apalachee High School softball coach Mike Cavey had hoped to avoid a first-round state playoffs matchup with Allatoona, but things didn’t work out that way.
As a result of the Lady Wildcats finishing as the No. 4 seed from the 8-AAAAA tournament, they will open the state tournament against Allatoona Wednesday (today) in a best-of-three format.
“We are there (in state), and now we have to go and give it all we have,” Cavey said. “We’ll see how the scoreboard ends up. I know we can’t take the same approach that we did against Loganville and Salem in the region tournament. The girls have to want it and the coaching staff has to prepare them to have the right mental and physical approach.”
AHS (15-16) overall fell to Salem Thursday 7-1 and have only scored four runs in their past three outings.
Allatoona plays in Region 8-AAAAA and is solid across the board, Cavey said.
“We have to play our best to have a chance,” the coach said. “We have to be prepared to play at the top of our game if we are going to compete with them.”
