Sunday sales begin in Commerce — on Sunday

Restaurants, grocery stores and convenience stores licensed to sell alcohol in Commerce can offer it on Sundays starting this Sunday, thanks to action taken Nov. 6 by city voters and on Monday night by the Commerce City Council.

After confirming the results of the two Nov. 6 Sunday sales referendums, the council voted unanimously Monday night on a motion by Ward 5 councilman Johnny Eubanks to amend the city’s alcohol ordinance to permit Sunday sales. There was no discussion prior to the vote.

Restaurants will be able to offer beer, wine and mixed drinks from 12:30 p.m. through 11:30 p.m. on Sundays, and grocery and convenience stores can sell beer and wine by the package during the same hours.
Commerce does not allow the package sale of distilled spirits.

The action came after the council certified the results of the Nov. 6 vote. By a margin of 457-260, voters approved the Sunday sale of alcohol by the drink. They approved the package sales by a margin of 439-273.
Only 718 Commerce voters participated in the alcohol vote — just shy of 22 percent of the city electorate.
