Woman arrested for allegedly biting husband

A Danielsville woman was charged with family violence and cruelty to children recently following an argument with her husband over the power bill.

Tavia Lyn Smith, 21, 2046 Friendship Church Road, Danielsville, was charged with battery FVA and third degree cruelty to children/allow child to witness felony/battery/family violence.

The incident report stated that officer Jerry Todd Whiddon was dispatched to a residence on Old Elberton Road, where he met with Smith, who was standing on the front porch. Smith called 9-1-1 to report that her husband was trying to leave with their child following an argument over being $3 short of cash to pay the power bill.

She said he hit her in the head and then left with their 11-month old. Whiddon noted that he did not see any visible signs of injury on Smith. While he was speaking with Smith her husband called her and she put him on the phone with the officer, who convinced him to return to the home. Once there, the husband told Whiddon that the argument began in the bedroom and that Smith blocked the doorway so he could not get by. The argument escalated with him trying to move her out of the way. At one point, she reportedly shoved him so hard it knocked him against the wall, breaking a power outlet and shocking him. He said Smith also bit him on the wrist sometime during the fight. He said this is not the first time she has bitten him and that law enforcement is aware of past incidents. Smith admitted to biting her husband and was arrested as the primary aggressor.

Other incidents on file at the sheriff’s office recently included:

•A man on Lance Patton Court spoke with officer Alan Stratton last week concerning someone stealing his financial identity. The man said his TV and Internet services were shut off by his provider, who informed him that his account had been transferred to an address in Gainesville. The man said he has lived at his Hull address for several years and has made no changes. His provider told him to file an incident report with the sheriff’s office.

•Officer Jerry Whiddon was dispatched to Whitsel Road concerning a metal gate that had been bent and taken off its hinges. Whiddon walked the property and did not find any other damage. The property owner stated that copper wiring had been taken from the property in the past.

•A woman on Sanford Road told officer Shawn Rhoades that an official from Capitol One Bank informed her that someone was trying to use her name and Social Security number to receive credit, but that they had been unable to do so because they could not provide a correct birthdate. She said she was advised to have her credit report flagged and that she wanted a report filed.

•A woman on Bryant Drive reported that her Ford Explorer, which her husband left unlocked in the driveway over the weekend, had been entered. She said she found the glove compartment open and papers lying around. A Tom Tom GPS system was stolen from the vehicle.

•A woman on Thomas Drive reported that her vehicle was stolen from her residence on Dec. 13. She said Athens-Clarke County PD reported that the vehicle was found on Helican Springs Road on Dec. 16.

•An outside a/c unit was reported missing from a vacant home on Brickyard Road.

•A couple who take care of a deceased person’s Sewell Mill Road home reported that someone had damaged a wooden fence in back of the house and moved things around inside the barn.

•A suicide threat was reported on Nowhere Road.

•A woman on Nowhere Road reported that her bank card account had been compromised. She said she discovered this when she attempted to use the card at her doctor’s office and her card was declined. Capital One told her there was a freeze on her account. She gave officer Shawn Rhoades a list of several suspects.

•A woman on Bellhaven Lane reported that her home had been burglarized. She told officer Jerry Whiddon that when she came home she had to “beat her key into the lock” to get it to open the door. Once inside, she found that fish tank gravel had been scattered around her living room. In her bedroom, she found her medicine box lying on her bed, open. Several prescription narcotic medications were missing from the box, according to the report. She named a suspect and several neighborhood juveniles reported that they noticed a red car at her house earlier in the day.

•A woman on Virginia Lane reported that someone entered her unlocked car overnight and stole her cell phone and Garmin GPS device. She provided serial numbers to the items, which were listed on GCIC as stolen.

•A woman on Hannah Heights Way reported that her vehicle was entered overnight. Items stolen included the car’s title, which was in the glove box and her brother’s GPS device.

•A man on O’Kelley Road reported that someone used his name and Social Security Number to open an Apple account. The suspect(s) had then purchased $1,500 worth of items, which were to be shipped to a California address. The transaction was canceled and the bank advised the man to file a report.

•A woman on Hwy. 106 reported that she has been receiving threatening text messages from her husband after she told him she was leaving him. Officer Lewis Fisher advised her of the warrant process, should she choose to file charges against her husband.

•A man on Grady Drive reported that he spotted two young black males behind his trailer. When he asked them what they were doing they reportedly threw something at the home and ran through the woods towards Woodale Street. Officer Brandon Moss located the young men who ran inside a residence on Maplewood Lane. They at first denied being in the trailer park, but then admitted that they were there, but denied throwing anything. Moss spoke with their mothers and then contacted a department of juvenile justice officer, who advised him to release the boys to their mothers and to file a juvenile complaint against them.

•The owner of Pizza and Sub Express reported that two counterfeit $20 bills were found in the cash register.

•A man on Hwy. 29 South reported that he has a “problem with anger” and was having thoughts of harming himself. He told responding officer Wesley Bryant that he wanted to go to the hospital to seek help for his thoughts. Bryant took him to Athens Regional for an evaluation.
