COMMERCE - Dr. Joe Harvey Slocum, 67, husband of Olivia Slocum and the son of the late Rev. Johnny Slocum and Beatrice Jameson Slocum, died Tuesday evening, January 22, 2013.
He was born in Stephens County and graduated from Franklin County High School. He received his Doctor of Divinity degree from International Seminary in 1985.
He was Interim Pastor at Mount Olive Baptist Church in Commerce, pastor of Webbs Creek Baptist Church in Homer, Gibbs Memorial Baptist Church in Bostwick, Morningside Baptist Church in Winder, First Baptist Church of Conley in Conley, and Poplar Springs North Baptist Church in Dublin.
Survivors include his wife, Olivia Slocum, Commerce; daughters, Michelle (Sonny) Trudgeon, Sharpsburg, Lynn (Juan) Rangel, Madison, and Suzette (Tim) Brown, Newnan; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Sandra (Stan) Fricks, Watkinsville, and Karen (Mike) Barger, Danielsville. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Suzanne Chestnut.
Ivie Funeral Home in Commerce was in charge of arrangements. Services were held at Maysville Baptist church. Interment was at Nails Creek Baptist Church.
