Although the Lady Tigers are 5-16 on the season, head coach Rex Gregg believes that they have a good chance to rack up a couple more wins before heading into the region tournament.
“It would be big to win a couple of these next games,” said Gregg. “If we can get our posts and our guards all scoring together, we have a really good chance. Wins would put us in a better place going into the (region) tournament.”
Saturday, the Lady Tigers picked up their fifth win of the season as they knocked off Tallulah Falls, 44-32.
Commerce had a huge first quarter, outscoring their opponent 15-3, and continued to play tough defense for the remainder of the game.
“We played really well,” said Gregg. “It was the most consistent game we have played all year. We shot the ball better and didn’t turn it over.”
Lily Mather was selected as player of the game after scoring 11 points and pulling down 15 rebounds. Hannah Davis added 13 points and Bridget Barnett posted nine.
Gregg also noted the strong performance from the Tiger bench. He complimented the play of Hannah Crumley, Hannah McRee and Bridget Barnett.
“It’s pretty good in high school when your bench gives you that kind of lift,” said Gregg. “All the girls seem to be contributing in some way.”
On Friday, Commerce went up against archrival Jefferson, and came out on the short end.
While the Tigers kept the score close for most of the game, foul trouble in the fourth quarter led to a Commerce meltdown. Jefferson put up 20 points in the fourth, to secure a 56-31 victory.
McClaine Martin led the Tiger scoring effort with 11 points. Hannah Davis added eight.
On Tuesday, Jan. 26, the Tigers hosted Lakeview Academy.
The Lions built a solid lead in the second quarter and outlasted the Tigers 46-38.
Hannah Davis had 15 points and 13 rebounds.
Tuesday, the Tigers fell to Towns County 69-27.
Commerce will travel to Hebron Christian Academy on Thursday, and then host Pinecrest Academy on Friday for senior night. Both games tip off at 6 p.m.
