The Apalachee High School golf teams are moving right along this spring.
Coach Kevin Morris has seen quality players from several competitors and the Wildcats and Lady Wildcats appear to be peaking at the right time. With the Region 8-AAAAA tournament on the horizon, the AHS teams are looking forward to the challenges they will face the remainder of the 2013 season.
Shelby Hanna continues to lead the Lady Wildcats. The defending region champion, Hanna is looking to repeat in that role this spring, although Morris said it the Lady Wildcats, as a whole, have a chance to qualify for state.
“Hanna’s score will be very important for us to get there,” Morris said. “We want her to win region again as an individual, but our team is strong as well.”
Hanna is the lone senior among the team’s top four players.
Cammie Alfonso is a junior for the Lady Cats while Taylor Compton is a sophomore and Michelle Gibson is a freshman.
Gainesville High School, which won state in AAA for boys and girls in 2012, is now in Region 8-AAAAA. AHS has also split its season series with region member Winder-Barrow.
For the AHS boys, Peyton Sanders and Cody Johnson have helped pace the Wildcats on the golf course. Sanders, a senior, has been successful because he has stayed away from having a bad performance on a particular hole.
“When you have a nine-hole match, then even one bad one can have a negative impact,” Morris said.
Johnson was one of the team’s top golfers a season ago and has continued in that role in 2013.
“We expected Johnson to be a top returner and he has delivered,” his coach said.
The AHS golf teams closed out the regular season Tuesday against Clarke Central.
The golfers are planning a practice round at The Chattahoochee Course later this week. The region competition will be at this course in coming days.
