The public next week will have its first opportunity to tell the Barrow County Board of Commissioners what it thinks about proposed public safety cuts and the higher tax rate that Winder property owners will pay in October. The BOC is required to have three public hearings before adopting the final budget Sept. 18. The hearings will be the next two Wednesdays — at 6 p.m. Sept. 11 and at noon and 6 p.m. Sept. 18 — in the BOC’s meeting room at the administration building on East Broad Street. Sheriff Jud Smith, whose budgets would be cut $777,000 under the proposal, said he plans to speak at the first hearing. Winder Mayor David Maynard has responded to the county via a letter in opposition to raising taxes in the city.
