Barrow County manager Jock Connell resigned Tuesday afternoon from the post he held for only eight months. District 3 Commissioner Steve Worley on Wednesday confirmed the resignation.
“I am shocked and disappointed,” Worley said.
Worley said Connell did not give him the reason for his decision, but he plans to meet with him in person to find out what is going on. Although the BOC has been generally supportive of Connell, the first eight months of the county’s new administration have been marked by controversies that largely played out behind the scenes in private meetings between elected officials. Among the controversies are the ongoing study about possibly privatizing the county government, the possible replacement of the longtime county attorney, and a budget for FY2014 that is being balanced through a major tax hike in Winder and cuts to the sheriff’s budgets.
