Cable-barrier stops potential I-85 collision

Braselton’s police chief thinks the new cable barriers on I-85 helped to prevent a deadly head-on collision on Monday afternoon.

“It did what it was supposed to do,” said police chief Terry Esco.

The recently-installed cable barriers were put to the test when a southbound 1996 Honda Accord apparently lost control and hit 10 metal poles supporting the cable system in Jackson County.

The vehicle landed with its top on the cable barrier. Its driver, Figueroa Alfredo Jr., Braselton, was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, Gainesville, with non-life threatening injuries.

Braselton police said one tire on Alfredo’s vehicle completely lost its tread and another tire was damaged, which possibly contributed to the cause of the accident.

The wreck occurred between the Ga. Hwy. 60 bridge and Ga. Hwy. 53 in Braselton.

The Georgia Department of Transportation has been installing the cable barriers along I-85 in hopes of preventing deadly cross-over accidents on the interstate.
