The Jefferson Caterpillar plant will be closed in June due to the economic downturn. Officials announced Tuesday morning that the facility, which makes fuel systems, will begin laying off some 89 employees starting in May. The local facility’s work will be moved to plants in Thomasville, GA and Pontiac, IL.
The company is also laying off 200 people at its Griffin GA plant, a sister facility to the Jefferson operation.
Caterpillar is offering employees a severance package and will work with appropriate agencies on outplacement services, officials said.
“It is never easy to make the decision to close a facility and I want to thank our employees in Jefferson for their work and efforts,” said Gary Stroup, Caterpillar vice president with responsibility for fuel systems. “We are taking steps to consolidate these operations in order to remain competitive in the long-run.”
According to Caterpillar officials, the firm is “rapidly executing strategic “trough” plans and implementing actions throughout the company to deal with a very challenging global business environment. Depending on business conditions, more layoffs and separations may be required as the year unfolds. Caterpillar is making these decisions in order to best position the company for long-term success and competitiveness in the global market.”
