Road closure for bypass construction

Pearl Pentecost Road will be closed at the future West Winder Bypass for the next roughly four months due to construction.

The detour will be Pearl Pentecost Road, to Carl-Cedar Hill Road, to State Route 211, to Barrow Park Drive, back to Pearl Pentecost Road and the reverse.

Pregnancy center to host share group

CAM Pregnancy Care Center, 127 West Candler St., Winder, will host a "safe and confidential" share group for women only on Monday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m.

Coffee Break Share Group "is a great way for women to get together to share the laughter and hard times of their lives," leaders state.

The share group will be held monthly.

Blood drives coming up

The American Red Cross has the following blood donation opportunities coming up in Barrow County:

•1-6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, at the Winder Public Library, 189 Bellview St.

•noon to 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, at Winder First United Methodist Church, 280 North Broad St.

•2-7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 9, at Bethlehem First United Methodist Church, 709 Christmas Ave.

To donate blood, download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, go to RedCrossBlood.org, or call 1-800-733-2767.

All blood types are needed. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood.

High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

Pet adoption drive

Barrow County Animal Control is holding a pet adoption drive for the Barrow County Veterans Resource Center through Oct. 31.

Drop off any five items from the following list and adopt an animal for $10:

•soup

•macaroni and cheese

•baked beans

•cereal

•fruit cups

•canned meat

•canned ravioli

•other non-perishable food items.

All donations go directly to the veterans resource center to provide for local veterans in need.

Ribbon cuttings for turf fields set

The Barrow County School System is planning ribbon-cutting ceremonies for the new synthetic turf fields at Apalachee and Winder-Barrow high schools.

The field renovations are a roughly $1.6 million project by the school system, backed largely with funding from Barrow County, which will also use the fields for its recreation programs.

The ceremony at Apalachee High School will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4. The ceremony at Winder-Barrow High School will be at 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12.

The public is invited to attend the ceremonies.

Barrow County Out of the Darkness Walk

First Christian Church of Winder will host the Barrow County Out of Darkness Walk from 9-10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at Winder-Barrow High School.

The walk is intended to raise awareness of and raise funds for suicide prevention.

Registration begins at 8 a.m.

Adventure Bags Jeep and Motorcycle Ride scheduled

Adventure Bags, Inc. will hold its eighth annual Jeep and Motorcycle Ride on Sunday, Sept. 29, at Cycle World of Athens, 4225 Atlanta Hwy., Bogart.

Registration begins at 10 a.m. and is $25 per bike and $5 per passenger. Lunch will be provided after the ride for all participants.

Proceeds will benefit Adventure Bags, an Auburn nonprofit that provides bookbags and other school supplies and essential items to children in crisis throughout the state.
