The Georgia Department of Transportation announced on Aug. 23 the awarding of 13 construction contracts totaling more than $37 million around the state, including the realignment of the roadway and bridge on State Route 11 over the Apalachee River at the Barrow and Walton County line.

The $5.3 million contract for the federal project was awarded to E.R. Snell Contractor, Inc., according to a GDOT news release. The project will “bring the bridge up to current standards for the serviceability and safety” along State Route 11, said Katie Strickland, a spokesperson for the GDOT District 1 office in Gainesville.

The bridge was first constructed in 1942, according to a concept report approved in 2004, Strickland said. The bridge and roadway will be realigned to the east and will not require a detour, she said.

The project has an estimated completion date of October 2020.
