One woman has been confirmed dead as a result of a fatal wreck this afternoon on Highway 8 in front of the Walmart shopping center. Five other people were injured.

Georgia State Patrol spokesman Gordy Wright said a passenger vehicle and a pickup truck collided in the intersection at the entrance of the shopping center. The driver of the car, 40-year-old Karen Shockley of Winder, was killed and her 15-year-old passenger injured. The initial investigation indicates the driver of the pickup truck, Joseph Crane, age 29 of Cornelia, ran the red light. Crane’s wife and two children, ages 18 months and six years old, were also injured.

Charges are pending, Wright said.

The accident is being investigated by the Georgia State Patrol post in Athens and the GSP Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT).
