By Nayeri Sevilla

Editor's note: Nayeri Sevilla is a 10th grade student in Barrow County. She moved to the United States from Nicaragua in October of 2021 and attends the Barrow County Newcomer Academy. At the Newcomer Academy, Nayeri and her peers work hard to develop their English proficiency and adapt to life in a new country and culture. As part of her studies, Nayeri is taking Multicultural Literature. Throughout this course, Nayeri and her classmates have been crafting their autobiographies via the storytelling device of their choice. Nayeri's classmates plan to share their stories through podcasts, photography, a picture book, or music. Nayeri, however, has aspirations of becoming an author, so she has chosen to tell her story through a three-part newspaper column series.  Published here in English, Nayeri's story was originally written in her native language of Spanish. Nayeri's instructors at the Newcomer Academy are extremely proud of all the progress Nayeri has made in her English proficiency, her dedication to this project and her bravery in sharing her personal journey with our Barrow County community.
