Dear Editor:
Expanding Medicaid means increasing access to federal health insurance coverage for low-income residents, in exchange for our state government putting up 10% with federal dollars supplying 90%.
A majority of Georgians support medicaid expansion allowing hundreds of thousands of Georgians to gain health care coverage. However, Governor Kemp and Republicans representing Barrow, Clarke and Jackson Counties continue to say “No” to covering individuals with annual incomes of $19,000.
Kemp’s excuse and those representing us, is that they just know the federal government will stop supplying 90% of the funding for expansion and Georgia will be on the hook for the total amount. The thirty-eight states that have expanded Medicaid for years are continuing to just put up 10%. Our federal tax dollars goes towards their 90%.
Our governor brags about his expansion of high-speed internet, granting bonuses, funding for water and sewer improvements, state budget surplus, etc. as he campaigns for re-election. But, he forgets to mention that the money used for those programs comes from the federal American Rescue Plan that he and our Republican representatives have vehemently trashed. He nor the others are worried about continued funding for those programs. So, why is it so distasteful to them to expand health care coverage to those that don’t qualify for existing programs nor have coverage available through their work?
We need a governor and representatives that listen to us — to fix what’s broken. Just one more reason to vote Democrat.
Sincerely,
Peggy Perkins
