A Dekalb County firefighter was arrested by Winder Police Oct. 10 on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. Jonathan Francis Cowart, 26, of 186 Cole Circle in Bethlehem, was stopped on East May Street for traveling 57 mph in a 45 mph zone.

When the officer approached the vehicle to speak with Cowart, he noticed a strong odor of alcoholic beverage coming from inside the vehicle.

Cowart initially denied drinking before conceding he had consumed “a little bit.” When asked how much constituted “a little bit,” Cowart replied “three beers, at dinner.”

Cowart explained that he was a fireman and was headed to “Station 3, Avondale.”

After failing field sobriety tests, Cowart was placed under arrest. Cowart then asked the officer, “You know what this is going to do to me right?”

The officer responded that he did not know, but that Cowart had done it to himself.

Cowart further explained his actions saying he and his wife had been having difficulties and that was one of the reasons he had been out drinking. Cowart asked the officer if he could go with his wife when she arrived to pick up his vehicle, however, Cowart’s wife refused to come to the scene and the vehicle was towed.

Once inside the patrol car, Cowart again pleaded for leniency saying the arrest would cost him his wife and his job. The officer responded by reminding Cowart that as a fireman he should be aware of the dangers of driving while impaired.

When Cowart demanded to know if the officer felt bad for him, the officer replied, “Honestly, no.”

Cowart was transported to the detention center where he blew a .198 and .187 during the state administered breath test. He was charged with DUI and speeding.
