PHOTO: Parkerson retires after 39 years of fire service

After 39 years of service, Barrow County Firefighter/EMT Steve Parkerson retired May 14. Parkerson began his emergency services career in 1981 and served for 30 years with Gwinnett Fire Rescue. While there, he worked his way through the ranks, eventually retiring from Gwinnett as battalion chief. After his first retirement, Parkerson realized he missed the fire service and came to Barrow County Emergency Services in 2013 as a firefighter/EMT. “His years of experience as a firefighter and chief officer were invaluable to us," Barrow County Emergency Services chief Alan Shuman said. "He served as a mentor to rookies and seasoned officers alike. He will be truly missed here." Parkerson says he’s ready to begin the next chapter of his life by touring the country on his motorcycle and spending time with his granddaughter.
