PHOTOS: BASA, Sims Academy students recognize National Deaf Awareness Day

On Sept. 23, American Sign Language students at Barrow Arts and Sciences Academy and Sims Academy participated in National Deaf Awareness Day. For the day, students chose to experience life without the ability to communicate verbally. Instead, the students spoke using ASL or other non-verbal methods. “This experience allowed the students to relate to those who use alternate methods of communication in their daily lives,” school leaders said. Students shared that the day was "difficult but it was an interesting experience.” They also said that it gave them a newfound respect for deaf people and deaf culture.
