Local wrestling teams miss out of state duals tournament

Apalachee's Isaac Budu wrestles his Walnut Grove opponent during a match between the two teams Friday, Jan. 15, in the first round of the GHSA Region 8-AAAAA duals tournament at Jackson County. The Wildcats weren't able to make the top four in the double-elimination tournament and will miss the state preliminaries this weekend and the state championship tournament next weekend. Walnut Grove went on to finish second in the region tournament, behind Jackson County. Third seed Greenbrier and fourth seed Eastside also qualified for the state prelims. In the Region 8-AAAAAA tournament at Habersham Central on Saturday, Jan. 16, Winder-Barrow went 0-4 (with losses to Buford, Lanier, Habersham and Dacula) and missed out on qualifying for the state. Both teams will now turn their attention to the upcoming region traditional tournaments next month. The top three wrestlers in each weight class will advance to the state tournament.
