One person was killed and another was injured in an accident Thursday morning on Highway 129 North near Talmo Trail.

Jackson County Emergency Services Director Steve Nichols said units from North Jackson Fire/Rescue and the Jackson County EMS responded to the accident around 6:25 a.m.

“Upon arrival they found a female patient dead on the scene and one other with injuries,” Nichols said. The injured party was taken by EMS to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, Gainesville, in stable condition.

According to the Georgia State Patrol report, accident was a head-on collision where a southbound vehicle crossed the centerline and hit a northbound vehicle head on. The driver that was hit was killed.

Jackson County Coroner Keith Whitfield identified the fatality as Maria Escanucla, 42, Gainesville.

There were three vehicles involved in the accident and the northbound lanes of Highway 129 were blocked, Nichols added. Traffic was re-routed around the accident scene for approximately two hours.

The Georgia State Patrol and the Jackson County Coroner’s Office are investigating the accident and cause of death.
