I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but over the last few years, there has been a significant uptick in the number of demented men (sorry ladies, you’re not a part of this editorial), entering houses of worship and doing violence.
It is of interest that the violence is not concentrated against a single religion or race. Whether it is a small black church in South Carolina or a mosque, a Jewish synagogue, an Amish school or a Baptist congregation...a youth group meeting, a Sunday or Wednesday event, the thing all of these targets have in common is they were considered soft targets...”gun free”...zones by the deranged attackers.
The cowards who commit this carnage are undeterred by gun restrictions...they are undeterred by the innocence of their victims...they are all weak evil men, cowards all.
The usual secular/liberal response to each tragedy is to call for stricter gun laws to disarm law abiding citizens; in effect creating more and more “gun free zones” within which criminals are free to operate with impunity.
This past September, against the sage advice of presidential candidate Joe Biden and other like-minded politicians, Texas passed a law allowing churches to form volunteer armed security teams. Just this past Sunday, a church and community in Texas was spared from becoming another victim in this senseless string of worship place violence because of their armed volunteer security force.
Perhaps others will be emboldened by this success to begin to address all of the gun violence we are experiencing across America. More commonsense gun laws like the one in Texas will reduce the number of cowards willing to commit heinous crimes against innocent victims by reducing the number of “gun free zones” in our communities.
On the same note...how stupid is it that our military bases are gun free zones? How many lives would have been saved if a soldier at Ft. Hood trained and certified by the U.S. military had been armed that fateful November 5th day in 2009 when 13 innocent Americans were killed and 30+ wounded by a terrorist? It took law enforcement more than 10 minutes to arrive at the scene and subdue the shooter.
Even after this tragedy, DOD rules still prohibited highly trained soldiers from carrying on base...thus the recent tragedies at Pensacola, Florida and Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
I know of no legitimate study which supports the idea that disarming lawful citizens reduces mass shooting tragedies. But, as the recent church incident at West Freeway Church near Fort Worth, Texas proves, armed resistance reduces the carnage.
