East Jackson assistant football coach Joel Conway, 34, was killed in an auto wreck on Ga. Hwy. 124 in West Jackson early Monday morning, according to the Georgia State Patrol. The accident occurred shortly before 7 a.m. near Dillons Walk subdivision, where Conway’s vehicle had flipped over several times and was lying on its side when emergency responders arrived on the scene, according to Jackson County public safety director Steve Nichols.
Conway was dead on the scene due to injuries sustained in the crash. There were no other injuries in the wreck.
Trooper first class C.E. Parker of the Georgia State Patrol confirmed Conway’s identity. According to witnesses, Conway’s vehicle was traveling south on Hwy. 124 and swerved to avoid hitting three deer standing in the roadway. The vehicle went off the roadway and struck a tree, then struck a second tree, causing it to overturn. Conway was wearing a seat belt.
Conway, who coached the defensive line at East Jackson, was in his first year with the Eagles. He previously coached four years at Jackson County.
According to a prayer request sent out by Jefferson United Methodist Church, Conway had a wife and a 2-year-old son.
