A rash of thefts from vehicles in the city has led Jefferson police chief Joe Wirthman to encourage residents to keep their cars locked — even while parked at their residence. Residents across the city, including several on Brittany Court, have reported items stolen from their vehicles.

At the Jefferson City Council meeting Monday night, chief Wirthman warned residents to lock their vehicles and not keep valuables inside.

Wirthman also warned drivers about recent thefts in the city in which suspects drive around neighborhoods looking for unsupervised vehicles that are being warmed up during cold mornings.

The police department has made several arrests in those type of incidents, he added.
