A man has been arrested following an incident where an off-duty Jefferson police officer attempting to stop a vehicle for driving erratically was sent to the hospital after the alleged assailant ran over his foot, an incident report states.

Ayodotun A. Akingbade, 42, of Rosewood Circle, Jefferson, faces one count each of hit and run, failure to obey police, aggressive driving, battery and obstruction from the Jan. 22 incident after he sped away from a Benton Road location at its intersection of Holder Siding Road in Jefferson where the officer stopped his vehicle and held up his badge, according to the report.

Akingbade’s vehicle was eventually stopped by Hall County deputies on Hwy. 129 in Gainesville following a chase. He reportedly told police that he was afraid the JPD officer was going to shoot him and that something jumped out at him from the bushes.

The JPD officer was taken to the hospital by a family member and was released with no broken bones, according to the report.
