Less than 24 hours after a Jefferson man was murdered, a neighbor has been arrested in connection with his death.

James Harrison Sr., 51, 646 Gordon Street, Jefferson, has been charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a felony for the killing of Phillip Cowan on Monday night.

The Jefferson Police Department was called to 627 Gordon Street in reference to a stabbing around 10 p.m. Officers found an unresponsive man identified as Cowan, 40, with a stab wound to his chest.

Cowan was transported by EMS to Athens Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased. Tuesday afternoon, Harrison was arrested.

The GBI was called in to assist the Jefferson Police Department in the investigation at the crime scene.

This is the first murder in Jefferson this year.
