Rotary constructs ramp for Childers

Workers on the ramp for Herman Childers included Johnny Westmoreland, David McGinnis, Mitchell Hill, Roy Gandy, Walton Hill, Alan Phillips, Ed Brown, Johnny Minish, James Adams and Allton Bishop.

The Rotary Club of Madison County recently constructed a handicap ramp for Herman Childers, an 81-year-old Madison County resident, who has been active in community service most of his life.

Childers was in the Georgia National Guard for over five years and was a charter member of the State of Georgia Disaster Relief team for 25 years. He traveled to several tornadoes, hurricanes and floods and was a member of the feeding group not only in Georgia, but all the surrounding states.

He worked at Westclock in Athens for 15 years, and the Dupont Company for 18 years. He retired because of severe arthritis in his legs and feet. He also is legally blind and was in need of a 32-foot ramp and five-foot platform on his porch. Childers expressed gratitude to members of the Rotary Club and volunteers who built the ramp, and he made a donation toward the materials.

This was the 754th ramp constructed by the Rotary Club. Several of the workers knew Childers as a neighbor and fellow member of the relief team.
