The bonds of battle can stretch far beyond war. And Madison County is the Memorial weekend destination for many U.S. veterans seeking the camaraderie of fellow military members.
The May 27-30 event marks the 31st-annual reunion and campout at the LZ Friendly (Landing Zone Friendly) property off Johnny McElroy Road, Danielsville. The event begins at 7 a.m. Friday and ends Monday.
There will be a flag retirement ceremony Saturday after noon, followed by a Saturday evening candle-light service “to honor our brothers and sisters on the Gone But Not Forgotten” wall.
The camp fee is $40 per adult for the entire weekend. Kids under 12 get in free. The LZ Friendly annual dues of $20 is also due when registering. Campers will receive two meals per day and beverages will be served. The chow hall is now air-conditioned. There is a bathhouse at LZ Friendly for men and women at the reunion. There is also a dumpsite on the property for disposal of garbage. The PX will sell all things military and 31st annual T-shirts.
Entertainment will include the Country River Band Friday night, the Common People Band Saturday night and the DJ JamnJimi playing hits from A.F.V.N. Radio.
“Bring along your favorite instruments and join in,” organizers said.
