A Carlton teenager was seriously injured in an accident Dec. 5 on Hwy. 72. According to a report from the Athens Post of the Georgia State Patrol, Leonard Lee Collins, 19, drove his eastbound Ford Mustang across the centerline on Hwy. 72 between Hwy. 172 and Brickyard Road at approximately 7:25 a.m. and struck a westbound Mack truck driven by John F. Cunningham, 45, Watkinsville.

The tractor-trailer is owned by Pilgrim’s Pride and was hauling live chickens. After the collision, the tractor-trailer traveled off of the roadway onto the south shoulder and struck a standing tree. The trailer then overturned and the cages of live chickens became dislodged.

Hwy. 72 was closed from Hwy. 172 to Hwy. 98 for almost six hours during the cleanup effort and reopened at approximately 2:15 p.m. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts. Collins had to be extricated by emergency personnel.
