Darlene Ann Hemphill died Wednesday, January 19, 2011, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

She was born April 26, 1947, in Jackson County, the daughter of the late Johnny and Sadie Wilson. She attended Bryan High School in Jefferson and was a faithful member of New Salem Baptist Church, where she served on the Deaconess Board and the ETS Choir. Her gift was cooking. She loved to cook and bake cakes for people in the community, loved ones stated. Mrs. Hemphill was preceded in death by a sister, Minnie Gresham.

Survivors include her husband, James Hemphill; daughter, Willene (Troy) Glasper; three brothers, the Rev. Fred Wilson, James Wilson, both of Jefferson, and Donald (Betty) Wilson, Hull; four sisters, Mary Lois Williams, Ora Dean Rowe, Elease (Isaac) Simpson, Lavern (Julius) Mack of Jefferson; sisters-in-law, Viola Childers and Wilene (Eugene) Summerour, Gainesville; brothers-in-law, Claude Hemphill, Johnny Dole Watkins, Gainesville, and Lonnie Gresham, Jefferson; one granddaughter, Ashley (Larry) Morrison; two grandsons, Tremain Glasper and Tredarius Glasper; two great-grandsons, Temeris Morrison and Azygn Morrison, all of Gainesville; special friend, Jeraldine Jenkin; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Monday, January 24, from New Salem Baptist Church in Jefferson with the Rev. Hazell Quarles, Pastor, and the Rev. Julius Mack, Eulogist, officiating. Burial was in Alta Vista Cemetery in Gainesville.

Pallbearers were McGarrett Simpson, Darien Rakestraw, Demoyance Johnson, Morris Gresham, Brian Norman and Rashad Jackson. Honorary pallbearers were New Salem Deacons.

Young’s Funeral Home, Gainesville, was in charge of arrangements.
