The Apalachee High School softball team may be small on numbers but their victory total is climbing rapidly.
Coach Mike Cavey’s team is now 8-1-1 after defeating Grayson 4-3 Monday. In what the coach termed an “intense” game, the Lady Cats got another strong performance from Ashley Gunter on the pitcher’s mound.
“It was amazing,” Cavey said. “Grayson has a great team. I am very proud of the girls.”
The game was highlighted to some degree by illegal pitches by Grayson.
“Considering the teams we’ve played, I am very impressed with our record,” Cavey said. “We’re getting solid play from numerous people. Jordan Allen is a tough out and got on base every time at bat Monday. She’s knocking the cover off the ball.”
Ansley Thompson continues to do well in the leadoff position.
“Someone different seems to be stepping up for us each game,” Cavey said.
Recent victories have also come at the expense of Salem (7-2), Norcross (8-2) and Central Gwinnett (4-3). The team also tied North Forsyth (1-1). The Norcross, Central Gwinnett and North Forsyth games were all part of the Hawk/Bulldog Invitation Tournament in Hoschton.
The victory against Salem was the Region 8-AAAA opener. Gunter earned the win against Salem allowing just five hits while striking out five and giving up no earned runs. She helped her own cause by going 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI double.
