The Commerce competitive cheerleading team proved itself as one of Class A Public's best with a second-place finish Friday (Nov. 15) at the state meet in Columbus.
The cheer Tigers finished with 87 points, 12 points behind state champion Gordon Lee. Commerce finished comfortably ahead of third-place Lake Oconee County (77.5 points). Irwin County (60.6 points) and Bowdon (58.5 points) rounded out the top five.
“I was so proud of our second-place finish,” coach Beverly Sailers said. “The girls did an amazing job and have worked so hard this season to get new skills and have them ready for state. This team has been one of the hardest working teams I have ever coached. The drive these girls had this season was amazing.”
Sailers also praised the leadership of seniors Ragan Allen, Rylee Huff and Kayla Pettite.
“They did a great job of pushing the girls and encouraging them at the same time,” she said.
Sailers said the program’s runner-up finish “is something to be proud of," noting the program's year-round efforts.
“The keys to the program performing to this level is training in the off season,” she said.
