The Jefferson boys’ and girls’ track teams each carved out second-place finishes in their first large-meet competition of the year. Hosting the Jefferson Relays, the Lady Dragons tallied 137 points while the Dragons totaled 106 points in the event, which featured seven relay races.
North Hall finished first out of eight teams in the girls’ standings with 161 points, while Newton took the boys title with 128 points in the 10-team field.
For the Lady Dragons, the girls' 4 x 1,600 team (Ella Rosenberger, Jamie Romano, Morgan Mitchell and Maggie Dyer) highlighted the meet by setting both a school and Jefferson Relays record, winning that event with a time of 24:58.91.
Mackenzie Wells added another first-place finish, capturing the high-jump title by clearing the bar at 5-0.
Runners-up for the Lady Dragons were the 4 x 100 team (Taylor Love, Mariah Starks, Mackenzie Wells and Akera Benton) who clocked a 53.14; the 4 x 400 team (Love, Maggie Dyer, Wells and Benton), which ran a 4:19.89; the distance medley relay team (Mitchell, Benton, Rosenberger and Dyer), which finished that event in 13:55.55; Benton, who placed second in the long jump with a distance of 16-07.75; and Ryan Childress, who threw a 31-04.25 in the shot put.
Third-place finishers were Love (300-meter hurdles, 50.83), Lauren Wagner (triple jump, 30-02), Ellie Isaacs (shot put, 30-01) and the 4 x 800 team (Romano, Mitchell, Rosenberger and Dyer), which ran that event in 11:39.38.
On the boys’ side, Jefferson picked up a pair of wins in relay events, winning the 4 x 800 (Clay Pender, Max Higgins, Ian Byers and Addison Cochran) with a time of 8:48.34 and the 4 x 1,600 (Cochran, Pender, Derek Hildebrand and Higgins) with a time of 19:12.70.
Tanner Carson grabbed a runner-up finish in the 110-meter hurdles (16.17), while the boys’ distance medley relay team (Pender, Alex Parrish, Hildebrand and Cochran) placed second with a time of 11:16.22.
Alex Mason finished third in the 300-meter hurdles (43.73), and Dontae Wilson grabbed third in the discus (140-02).
Both teams will run at the Greater Atlanta Christian Invitational Saturday. Jefferson hosted a meet with Gainesville and North Hall this past Tuesday, but results were not available.
